Patients are frequently uncomfortable discussing with healthcare professionals issues that involve the genitalia and rectum; however, gathering an adequate history and properly conducting a physical exam are vital. Examining case studies can help prepare advanced practice nurses to accurately assess patients with problems in these areas.
To prepare:
- Review each of the weekly Advanced Practice Skills Assignment
- Review the Advanced Practice Skills Checkoff Rubric Download Advanced Practice Skills Checkoff Rubric
- Practice completing all of the skills you will demonstrate during the Checkoff
- Complete the sign up for the Skills Check-off (should have been done in week 8/9 with your instructor)
- Secure a family member or friend to serve as your practice patient during the checkoff.
- Prior to your scheduled check-off time, gather all the materials from your skills kit so they are available to utilize during your skills check off.
- Log into the check off link provided by your instructor.
- Demonstrate your skills on your patient following the rubric provided.
Assignment
Utilizing a practice patient and skills kit, you will demonstrate advanced assessment skills included on the grading rubric.
Check offs will be scheduled with your instructor during week 8/ 9 and the actual check offs completed during weeks 9, 10, and 11.
Complete the demonstration of skills on your practice patient with your instructor observing. You should verbalize the assessment you are completing as described in the rubric
After successfully completing this assignment with a minimum score of 80%, you will receive a certificate of completion.

PHYSICAL EXAM CHECKOFF – LYMPH NODE PALPATION (VISUAL + SCRIPT)
Use finger pads in gentle circular motion. Compare both sides (bilaterally). Follow exact order.
