Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in applying pathophysiology knowledge. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This discussion will support the professional formation of the nurse practitioner (NP) role.
Course Outcomes

A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

The purpose of this discussion is to examine an assigned disease process and determine which disease process explored in the discussion Janessa, the client, is experiencing. Follow the instructions below and your faculty member will reveal which disease process Janessa is experiencing at the end of the discussion week.
Step 1: Review the following client scenario:
Janessa, a 41-year-old female client, presents to the NP complaining of shortness of breath, weakness, and dizziness for “about a month.” She denies having a cough or recent illness. She has a history of endometriosis, and her physical assessment reveals her lungs are clear to auscultation bilaterally, and her mucous membranes are pale.

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by symptoms such as dyspnea, fatigue, and weakness, resulting from structural or functional cardiac abnormalities leading to reduced cardiac output and elevated intracardiac pressures (Schwinger, 2021). The primary pathophysiological mechanisms of HF include the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which cause vasoconstriction, fluid retention, and cardiac remodeling. These compensatory mechanisms initially maintain perfusion but eventually contribute to worsening cardiac function and symptoms (Schwinger, 2021).
Janessa’s symptoms of shortness of breath, weakness, and dizziness are consistent with HF. The pale mucous membranes may indicate anemia, a common comorbidity in HF that exacerbates symptoms by reducing oxygen-carrying capacity and increasing cardiac workload (Schwinger, 2021). However, the absence of pulmonary crackles or peripheral edema is notable, suggesting her presentation may not involve severe fluid overload, which is more typical of left-sided HF (Heidenreich et al., 2022).
