Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.

In this module’s Discussion, you reviewed some healthcare issues/stressors and selected one for further review. For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. You will also review research that addresses the issue/stressor and write a white paper to your organization’s leadership that addresses the issue/stressor you selected.

Develop a 2 to 3 page paper, written to your organization’s leadership team, addressing your selected national healthcare issue/stressor and how it is impacting your work setting. Be sure to address the following:

  • Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization. Use organizational data to quantify the impact (if necessary, seek assistance from leadership or appropriate stakeholders in your organization).
  • Provide a brief summary of the two articles you reviewed from outside resources on the national healthcare issue/stressor. Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor is being addressed in other organizations.
  • Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the scholarly resources you selected. Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively. Be specific and provide examples.

Addressing the Impact of Nursing Shortages in Our Organization

Introduction

The healthcare sector continues to face several issues that affect its ability to meet the healthcare needs of the community members. One of these issues, which has also been determined to be a national issue, is the nursing shortage. According to Tamata and Mohammadnezhad (2023), there will continue to be a shortage of Registered Nurses because of the increasing demand for care services, limited nursing training facilities, and baby boomer retirements. Our organization is no exception to these challenges. Our staff members experience burnout and other issues, which lead to a nursing shortage. Such issues also lead to poor patient outcomes, low staff morale, and threats to the long-term sustainability of the workforce.

Impacts on our Organization

The increased nurse-to-patient ratios, high turnover rates, and high overtime reflect the impacts of staffing shortages in our facility. According to the Human Resource data, there has been an RN vacancy rate of around 18% for the last eight months. Moreover, the organization relies on agency nurses, who fill around 25% of the ICU and med-surg unit shifts. The organization’s reliance on temporary staff has led to an increase in labor costs of around 35% over the past three months.
